The Challenges

Rather than following a formal structure the course consisted of a numbere of challenges designed to teach the Scouts initiative, innovation and resourcefulness.

Challenge 1: Falling in the water

Walk with the Patrol to find Scout Falls - a hidden swimming hole at the top of a flood damaged valley.

Results

Luckily, the first Patrol up discovered that the path was a lot worse than originally thought and spent all morning trying to find Scout Falls! This meant we had a much better understanding of the time needed for the afternoon groups and cut a few corners using cars. The falls are a beautiful spot and most Patrols could not resist a quick dip in the icy fresh water.

Challenge 2: Town Quest

Results

The photo evidence will be added to the photo pages soon. There was a very limited time to achieve this, but once again, the Scout uniform won the day and the Patrols blagged their way into all kinds of places.

  • Yellow Patrol invaded the local $2 store - I am sure they could have walked out with anything!;
  • Red Patrol upset the local police by asking to be locked up - they were not obliged!;
  • Green Patrol went to the porpoise pool in search of animal photos;
  • Blue Patrol sucked up big time with a huge choco bar for S;

Not to mention a 4 minute interview on the Show Radio! (podcast above)

Challenge 3: Community Service

The first 2 Patrols were asked by Coffs Harbour Scouts to help them finish the new floor in the Scout Hall. Damaged by the Autumn 2009 floods in the town, the hall has been totally replaced at great expense. However, the parade circle and other floor markings that had been a feature of the hall had not yet been repainted.

The second 2 Patrols were invited to the Coffs Harbour Art Gallery to support a local choir performance - setting out the auditorium, greeting visitors and even introducing the choir with a short speech about Scouting!

Results

A few hours of head scratching, careful marking and four coats of painting produced a pleasing result for the local Scout Hall. It was a bit nerve racking at first - a brave invite by the Scout Group in the first place. I hope that the visitors at their anniversary event next month will marvel at the results.

The gallery were pleased with the behaviour and attitude of the Scouts - and we helped to raise the profile of Scouting in the local area.

Challenge 4: Flying Fox

Thanks to the talent and qualifications of Batman and Shaggy, we were able to offer the Flying Fox as another learning opportunity.

Results

Despite some early confusion over the setup, everyone got a great go on the permanent fox at the campsite, swooshing over the tree tops!

Challenge 5: Promote the course

Make a webpage of your time on the course.

Results

Challenge 6: Walk for your Breakfast

No late nights on this course, but a very rude awakening at 4.55am for all of the Scouts (and most of the leaders - at this point, it should be noted that Fluff had her own rude awakening several hours later - thanks for helping with that, Rabs!). Thieves (of the four footed, furry type) had raided the kitchen and made off with the breakfast! The Patrols needed to motivate themselves to find it.

Results

Cereal was spotted 2 kms up the road and raison toast 2 kms the other side of Glenreagh village. Tins of fruit needed retrieving from the caving system and everything else was in the maze. One Patrol learnt the lesson of leaving their recovered items unattended and another found out that milk really does just appear in the fridge - even if you look really hard for the cow!

Challenge 7: Creative Program Planning

Can you really run an entire term's program on the sounds of one track of a CD?

Results

We will post the results soon!

Challenge 8: Team construction / Qualities of Leadership

Learn about leadership types and put them into practise by building a camp table.

Results

But there is no equipment or poles, so start by making your own!

Final Challenge - Present your ideas and feedback on the course

Once again, we proved that what happens on ASLC really does need to stay on ASLC!
