Scout Youth Council (SYC) – What is the buzz all about?

in

The Scout Youth Council or SYC is a meeting of Scouts held within a District, Region or State. It is a chance to discuss issues and ideas that are important to Scouts locally and nationally.

We use the SYC as a network to pass news and views from Troops to State and back again. The representatives come from each Troop locally to put forward their ideas for change - It’s a bit like a Troop Council for Districts, Regions and the whole State!

How does it work?

Troop Councils nominate 2 PLs and 1 other Scout to attend the District SYC. The Scouts organise their own meeting in the District – only one adult attends to listen to the ideas, while another adult must be there to provide two deep leadership. The adults do not participate.

The Scouts set their own agenda and manage their own meeting. Minutes of the meeting are sent to the District Mindari, each Troop and to the Region SYC.

Scouts can bring any ideas or issues to the meeting and share them with other Scouts from the District .

When does this happen?

Each District can set its own timetable, but they should work with the District Mindari and Region SYC to plan the best time.

District and Region SYCs should happen as often as they are needed – just like a Troop Council!

The District Scout Leader can help to organise all of the Troops to meet together. Contact your District Scout Leader or Region Commissioner (Scouts) for details of SYCs that might already be happening in your area.

Some SYC Meetings can take place online or through a phone conference or even by email!

How can you find out more?

Have a look at these pages and download the SYC Starter Kit and other information. Contact your District Scout Leader or Region Commissioner (Scouts). Contact a member of the State SYC for advice and information – the details are in the starter kit!
