Session Overview

The first impressions that the Scouts receive on the course will help to set the atmosphere and expectations for the rest of the course. Take some time to inform the Scouts about the course ahead and their role in it.

Time to allocate for this session: 15 minutes

Recomended programming for this session: This session must be the first session of the course.

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, Scouts will:

  • feel welcome and comfortable in the course environment
  • have been introduced to course staff and other trainees
  • understand the purpose, structure and timings of the course
  • know the safety and comfort information for the course location
  • begin to interact with other course participants

Content to be Covered

During the session, you must cover:

  • opening ceremony, including appropriate flag parade
  • introduction to yourself and course staff
  • safety and comfort information for the course location (e.g. fire procedures, toilets)
  • brief overview of the course content and structure
  • timetable for the course, at least the next few sessions
  • an “ice-breaker”

Measuring Success

The session outcomes will have been achieved if:

  • trainees are talking to each other and look at ease in the environment
  • all attending know the safety and comfort information for the location
  • a Scout opening ceremony has been completed

Training Adult Leaders
